Several hundreds of years ago, the famous Changchun-qingkeer Monastery held a 10-day horse racing festival every year so as to worship the holy mountain and also celebrate the harvest year. Since 1960, the festival has been celebrated on 1, August and later developed into international Horse Racing Festival.
The horse racing includes horse stamina competition, horsemanship competition, trotting-trick competition, among of which the horsemanship competition is the most wonderful. In this competition you can see the most exciting and skillful performance, such as riding horse under its belly, handstand upon the dashing horses, target archery while riding horse and picking Hada while riding on dashing horse. Besides, there are also competition of Bearing Water, Molding Ciba and neck strength. During the holiday, tens of thousands of visitors both from home and abroad will come here.
With the coming of the festival, the grassland will be a world of tents. Hundreds of tents constellate together just to form a flowing city. The lining white tents studded upon the green grassland just set up a beautiful picture in front of you.
Horse Racing Festival is also an show time for Tibetans to wear splendid national costumes. Each of them would like to wear their most beautiful clothes and jewelry which can indicate their rich and abundant life. In this festival, they also perform Tibetan Opera and hold nationally-characteristic sports meeting, such as Getu and also trade fair of local products. Kham Prefecture is the home of songs and dances, thus an important program in this festival is Tibetan party of songs and dance. People dance to the rhythms of the music, waving their long sleeves.
